Singer Johnny Mathis, 85, discovered music at a time before rock and roll existed.
The man nicknamed “The Voice of Romance,” in recognition of the smooth but sensitive vibrato-laden approach he’s applied to the vocal delivery of countless tender ballads, was just 15 in April of 1951 when “Rocket 88,” arguably the first ever rock and roll single, was released by Chess Records.
Mathis released his first album Johnny Mathis: A New Sound in Popular Song in 1956, breaking through to the mainstream following his television debut on The Ed Sullivan Show in June of 1957.
